The President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has extended his congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping on securing a third term in office.
Xi was granted a third five-year term as president by the unanimous votes of almost 3,000 members of the National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, on Friday. This makes Xi one of the most dominant leaders in generations of the world’s second-largest economy.
The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, with 2,952 votes for and none against.
The Chinese Embassy in Maldives announced that President Solih had sent a message of congratulations to Xi on Friday.
The embassy quoted Solih as wishing Xi every success in fulfilling the confidence that Chinese citizens continue to place in his leadership and vision. Solih also highlighted the progress of the partnership between Maldives and China in his message and expressed his enthusiasm for deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Before 2018, Chinese leaders were limited to two terms in office. However, Xi changed the restriction, granting him a reach and authority not seen since the era of Chairman Mao.
