Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which manages Velana International Airport, stated that the Maldives has had visitors from 39 different nations in 2021.
According to MACL data, during the pre-COVID period in 2019, Maldives received tourists from 35 destinations; however, the number has climbed even throughout the challenging period of the pandemic.
Currently, 25 destinations offer direct flights to the Maldives, up from 19 before the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the number of airlines flying to the Maldives has also increased, with 36 flights to the island nation in 2021, up from 34 at the end of 2019.
MACL was one of the companies hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but as the number of visitors to the Maldives has grown, so has the company’s financial situation. According to the data, the Maldives recorded 545,000 arrivals and 565,000 departures in 2021.
Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, Minister of Tourism, took part in discussions on Friday to establish more flights from Russia and Eastern Europe to the Maldives as part of efforts to increase visitor arrivals in the Maldives.
