The Maldives government has agreed to a credit line of MVR 618 million with India’s EXIM Bank for the building of sports facilities.
According to President’s Office Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez, this line of credit will be used to modernize existing sports equipment in the Maldives as well as develop sports facilities and fields throughout the country.
In addition, the government indicated that this loan will be utilized to build youth centers and supply necessary equipment for athletes and participants in sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, and table tennis.
Mabrook further stated that the fund will be used to renovate the National Football Stadium and establish national-standard sports centers. He also mentioned that synthetic tracks will be built on four islands.
Projects planned under the credit line:
- Establishing youth centers in HDh. Kumundhoo and Th. Kandoodhoo
- Upgrading the National Football Stadium
- Construction of a national basketball center multiplex
- Developing a national volleyball court
- Construction of a national table tennis center
- Construction of an indoor sports complex in Kulhudhuffushi City
- Establishing synthetic tracks in Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Addu City Hithadhoo
The fund will also be utilized to help with the development of sporting facilities capable of hosting international tournaments.
According to the government, development projects undertaken via this credit line will serve to improve the country’s sports sector.
