President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine purchased from AstraZeneca Singapore will be delivered by July.
In a press conference today, President Solih stated that AstraZeneca Singapore had confirmed that the Maldives would receive the vaccine next month. President Solih further stated that the company informed the government of the decision at today’s meeting.
This comes after Health Minister Ahmed Naseem stated in May that the Maldives would receive 700,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca Singapore by June.
The government has also agreed to purchase 300,000 doses of Covishield from the Serum Institute of India, with just 100,000 doses of the vaccine received thus far.
Furthermore, President Solih indicated that the Sputnik V vaccine would be delivered four weeks after the arrangement was signed. He did not, however, specify when the agreement will be signed.
President Solih also discussed the United States’ donation of COVID-19 vaccines. He expressed optimism that the vaccine doses would be delivered this month. However, the President stated that neither the number of vaccine doses nor the type of vaccines had been finalized or informed by the US.
