The Maldives has received MVR 70 million in grant aid from India to fund development projects carried out by local councils.
The agreement to finance High-impact Community Development Projects, a Maldives government initiative to empower local councils, was inked during Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid’s official visit to India.
Additional MVR 70 million in grant funding would be awarded to 10 development projects being carried out by Island Councils and City Councils under the terms of the agreement.
The development projects, which began to launch socioeconomic growth, will comprise infrastructure for the education system, health, and community development, as well as environmental protection, women empowerment, and child welfare initiatives.
In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to raise India’s grant support to the Maldives from MVR 85 million to MVR 155 million.
The MoU was initially signed on March 17, 2019, during the official visit to the Maldives of India’s then-Minister of External Affairs, late Sushma Swaraj.
