In a passionate appeal at the second committee meeting of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Maldives has urgently implored the international community to intervene and halt the relentless attacks on Gaza’s Palestinian population.
Addressing the assembly, the Maldives delegation highlighted the dire plight of the Palestinian people, who find themselves ensnared in an unending cycle of despair and devastation. Their very existence, identity, and history remain under relentless threat. The Maldives emphasized its unwavering dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region, expressing profound distress at the dire situation unfolding in the Gaza Strip.
The Maldives also expressed its grave concerns over Israel’s military directive, which called for the relocation of over one million civilians from northern Gaza to the south. This directive was noted as a clear violation of multiple international laws and Conventions. In alignment with the international community, the Maldives called for the immediate reversal of this order and the lifting of the blockade to enable the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.
Additionally, the Maldives characterized the situation in Gaza as a matter of survival. It called upon the global community to employ all possible means to bring an end to the ongoing assaults on innocent civilians. Furthermore, the Maldives reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian people, with a particular focus on advancing the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
