Maldives has won the bid to host the SAFF Championship in 2021, which had previously been scheduled for 2020.
The Maldives gained the majority of votes over Nepal, the only other country to submit a bid, during a meeting of the South Asian Football Federation on Monday to host the biggest South Asian football tournament.
The tournament was originally intended to take place in Bangladesh, but it was postponed twice owing to an increase in COVID-19 infections in the region.
Following that, the SAFF governing body opened proposals for new tournament hosts on July 23. The Maldives, India, and Nepal had all indicated interest in hosting the tournament.
This would be the first time that Maldives would solely host the football event; previously, in 2008, Maldives and Sri Lanka co-hosted the SAFF Championship, which Maldives won against India in the final match in Colombo.
