Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated Maldivians living in Sri Lanka are safe and doing well in response to concerns over the violent protests against the Sri Lankan government, triggered by the country’s worst ever economic crisis.
Communication Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Miuvaan Mohamed, stated the government is closely monitoring the situation of Maldivians living in Sri Lanka. Miuvaan said Maldivians in Sri Lanka are safe despite the ongoing protests and violence in the country. He said Maldivians are fully complying with orders from authorities, adding there have been no reports of injuries to any Maldivians.
Protests against the Sri Lankan government intensified last week after protesters stormed the Presidential Residence, forcing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to announce that they would be submitting their resignation soon.
