Male’ City Council has requested a budget allocation from the government to settle about MVR 30 million in outstanding bills to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu has disclosed.
During last week’s dispute between WAMCO and the city council, the company claimed that Male’ City Council owed them MVR 30.5 million in overdue payments.
Muizzu reacted in a tweet on Friday, saying that Male’ City Council owed WAMCO MVR 30 million in unpaid payments when he took office in May. He said the council has now requested for a budget allocation from the government.
The recent quarrel between Male’ City Council and WAMCO began last Wednesday, when the corporation started doorstep garbage collection services in Male’ while refusing to accept waste left on the street.
On Thursday morning, Male’ City Council collected trash from the streets and dumped it in front of WAMCO’s gate. Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh claimed the event was unintentional and resulted from “miscommunication” between the council and WAMCO.
