Male’ City Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that the effort to establish a public Wi-Fi service covering the entire city will begin by the end of 2021.
He said that the country’s two main telecom providers, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, have indicated interest in the project, and that the proposals made by the two companies are now being assessed, adding that the project would begin by the end of this year.
Dr Muizzu noted that the council intends to give public Wi-Fi access across Greater Male’, but that the project would initially cover Male’ before moving on to Villimale. He stated that the project will commence in Hulhumale when the entire municipality is transferred to Male’ City Council’s administration.
While outlining the strategy for the public Wi-Fi project, Muizzu stated that the objective is to provide free public Wi-Fi in Male’ City up to a certain limit.
Aside from the present work on establishing a public Wi-Fi service, he added that a significant portion of the project to install a comprehensive CCTV network in Male’ City has been completed, with the first CCTVs to be installed in mosques.
