Election Commission Vice-President Ismail Habib announced that the by-election to fill the position of Male’ City Mayor will take place on January 13, 2024. Speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu program, Habib provided key details regarding the electoral process.
The opportunity for candidates to contest the election will be open from November 28 to December 13, offering a window for individuals interested in taking on the responsibilities of Male’ City Mayor to submit their nominations.
Habib further elaborated that in addition to the mayoral position, the by-election will also include the election of three members for the Male’ City Council, a member for the V. Rakidhoo council, and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members for 18 islands. The election day is scheduled for Saturday, January 13, with the results expected to be announced on January 15.
The necessity for the by-election arises from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s resignation from the position of Male’ City Mayor following his victory in the presidential election, prompting the Election Commission to facilitate the process of selecting a new leader for the city.
