The massive infrastructure project connecting Male’, Villimale, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi through a bridge has been awarded to India’s Afcons Infrastructure Limited, reports local media outlet Adhadhu.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih previously stated that the Male’-Thilfushi bridge, the current administration’s key infrastructure project, was in the bid evaluation phase and that it will be awarded by the end of this month.
According to the report, India’s EXIM Bank requested that Afcons Industries be awarded the Greater Male’ Connectivity Project, the country’s largest infrastructure project. However, no formal statement has been issued by the Maldives government on the subject.
Afcons Industries had already been granted the project to build Addu City’s roadways and water drainage system.
The government allocated USD 411 million in this year’s budget for the construction of the Male’-Thilafushi bridge, which would be funded with USD 100 million financial aid from the Indian government, contribution from the Maldives government, and a USD 400 million loan from EXIM Bank with a 5-year grace period.
Furthermore, a Dutch company was awarded the survey for the 67km bridge’s construction for USD 15 million.
