The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) reported the death of a detainee awaiting trial outcome on Wednesday.
The MCS verified the inmate’s name as Ismail Shabeen, 46, and stated that he was brought to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in an emergency at approximately 19:00 Wednesday due to respiratory issues.
According to the MCS, his health worsened, and he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit, where he died.
Corrections stated that the hospital informed them that Shabeen died thirty minutes after he was brought to the hospital at 19:30. They also mentioned that he was a diabetic patient who was undergoing treatment at the time of his death.
The MCS added that they had alerted the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives about the matter as soon as Shabeen was transported to the hospital.
Furthermore, Corrections stated that Shabeen was imprisoned pending the outcome of a trial on various drug-related offences ranging from drug misuse to drug possession to drug peddling.
