Mohamed Nasheed, Speaker of the People’s Majlis, has appointed a British Queen’s Counsel (QC) lawyer to represent him and oversee the investigation into the May 6 bombing.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the People’s Majlis, Kirsty Brimelow QC of Doughty Street Chambers London has been appointed to work alongside local and foreign law enforcement and lawyers to gather evidence and apply national and international law in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Following Brimelow’s appointment, Nasheed stated that her extensive experience will be critical in identifying and apprehending those who plotted, planned, and financed the assassination attack against him, which was motivated by radical religious views. “A functioning justice system is a crucial part of democracy,” he said.
Nasheed is currently in the United Kingdom, seeking more care for the injuries he acquired during the assassination attempt. He recently requested that his leave be extended and that he be allowed to remain abroad.
