Defence Minister Mariya Didi was negligent in carrying out her duties after receiving information about a possible assassination attempt on Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed, according to the May 6 inquiry report published by the Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee).
The May 6 inquiry report revealed that Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb notified Minister Mariya of a probable attack on Nasheed, but she did not share the information with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Command or the relevant authorities, which the 241 Committee deemed completely unacceptable.
MP Ilyas stated that he obtained information from a friend that a terror attack was being prepared against Speaker Nasheed with a USD 3 million budget, which he immediately reported to Minister Mariya.
The 241 Committee report revealed that, despite the fact that Ilyas had called to inform Mariya of the information he had received, she did not consider it relevant or credible intelligence, according to her answers during the parliamentary inquiry.
It was also discovered that Defence Minister Mariya had not even attempted to obtain additional information on the situation, and that she had told the 241 Committee that she does not consider information delivered over the phone without names or leads to be trustworthy intelligence.
Lawmakers and the public have been advocating for action against those who were neglectful in their duties in the days leading up to the May 6 bombing, which was also one of the recommendations proposed by the 241 Committee in their report.
