The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused Mihaaru News of spreading propaganda in connection with the attempted assassination of the party’s leader and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.
The party issued a statement in response to an article published online by Mihaaru News, citing an unnamed source from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The article contained various facts concerning Speaker Nasheed’s security and protection, as well as his home, Kenereege, which was used to depict Nasheed’s reluctance to assist the security forces in protecting him, as well as how Nasheed declined extra protection when it was provided.
The ruling MDP labelled the article as propaganda insulting Speaker Nasheed, who is recovering from grievous injuries sustained in the assassination attempt. The party stated that Speaker Nasheed is a high-profile politician whose safety is critical, before going on to claim that the state failed to provide him with protection and that the military forces were unable to protect him even while he was president in 2012.
The statement also addressed an unnamed source, who was implied to be a member of Nasheed’s security team, in the Mihaaru News piece, expressing severe worries that a member of Nasheed’s security forces had revealed the information to a local news outlet anonymously.
The party demanded an investigation into the report’s unknown source to ascertain if he was a member of Speaker Nasheed’s security staff. The statement also urged authorities to expedite the probe into the bomb blast.
