The chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) committee probing the May 6 bombing, Vilifushi MP Hassan Afeef, has claimed that the IED attack on Speaker of People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed was a three-million-dollar “task,” citing information uncovered during the MDP inquiry.
Afeef made the remarks during a meeting with MDP lawmakers on Thursday to assess the work done by the MDP’s May 6 Committee this week. He elaborated on his remark, claiming that Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb received a phone call from a friend on the night of May 3 asking a meet-up. During the meeting, Ilyas was allegedly informed by a friend that a three-million-dollar reward had been offered for the assassination of Nasheed and that an advance payment of this money was now being arranged, and that the plan had been orchestrated by religious extremists.
According to Afeef, following the meeting, Ilyas shared the information with Nasheed and Defense Minister Mariya Didi, who informed Ilyas that Nasheed’s security was already at the greatest level.
Following the May 6 bombing, several senior officials from the security forces and relevant authorities have been summoned to the parliamentary probe being undertaken by the National Security Forces Committee. The inquiry report is scheduled to be released by the end of next week.
