Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main ruling party of the current administration has stated they are opposed to teachers wearing niqabs in schools as their identities are not guaranteed.
A statement released by MDP stated that most parents and students alike want the faces of their teachers to be seen, with their identities guaranteed, whilst they teach the students.
Moreover, MDP also noted that it’s been a local tradition for years and schools have done their best to uphold this standard throughout the years. Further, schools should be a place where students feel safe and the identities of their teachers should be guaranteed.
MDP also expressed concern that fanatics are inciting violence against people who oppose niqab in school environments by labeling them as apostates and calling for their murder.
