Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed has announced the establishment of a new political party, signaling a significant development within the ruling party.
Nasheed, who also serves as the Speaker of Parliament, initiated the formation of a distinct political movement named Fikuregge Dhirun following his defeat in the presidential primary held in January. In response to clashes with the government and its policies, all lawmakers from the faction, except Nasheed, tendered their resignations from the MDP.
The resignation of a total of 12 MDP members ensued from these circumstances. This decision was prompted by the expulsion of Parliamentarian Ali Azim from the MDP and his subsequent ban from rejoining the party for a minimum of one year due to his involvement in opposition political activities surrounding the Chagos Islands dispute.
At a press conference, the resigning MDP members officially declared the establishment of their new political party. They further disclosed their intention to field a candidate in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for September 9.
