The Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) May 6 Committee, which is probing the May 6 bombing, has accused Maldives National University (MNU) students of supporting religious extremist ideologies.
The comment was made by Vilifushi MP Hassan Afeef, chair of the May 6 Committee, during a meeting with MDP members on Thursday to update them on the committee’s findings.
Afeef stated that the committee informed the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), while discussing the commission’s initiatives to minimize hate speech, that it had recently been observed that MNU students were embracing extremist beliefs and asked if there was a method to address it.
However, Afeef has not provided any additional information about such a serious claim leveled against MNU students.
Afeef went on to express the HRCM’s concerns over the defense ministry’s refusal to give information, citing the country’s national security laws. According to Afeef, the HRCM assured the committee that the commission’s work would continue even if the defense ministry did not provide information.
