Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has stated that with the start of peak fishing season in numerous locations of the country, the company is having major trouble purchasing and storing large amounts of fish.
To cut down on the amount of time fishing boats spend waiting in line, the company has also begun weighing fish on Fridays, which was previously not done.
MIFCO also stated that, with the cold storages at full capacity, it has begun to export fish after loading them onto carrier vessels. It went on to say that as a result of this, the company has decreased the number of fish it will buy from each boat to 5 tons.
The company bought 49,000 tons of fish last year, and 56,000 tons of fish have been purchased so far this year. This month alone, MIFCO purchased nearly 8,000 tons of fish.
