Defence Minister Mariya Didi was briefed on a possible attack on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, according to local media,
According to reports, a parliamentarian who also serves on the National Security Services Committee (Committee 241) informed the Defense Minister of a possible attack, claiming that he received information from a citizen about a USD 3 million plot to attack Speaker Nasheed.
Following this, Defence Minister Mariya stated that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) was monitoring Speaker Nasheed’s security. Furthermore, she told local media that Speaker Nasheed’s security had been raised to the highest level two months before the parliamentarian revealed the information.
However, Major General Abdulla Shamaal stated earlier that MNDF had requested relevant authorities to remove the motorcycles that were part of the Neelofaru Road, where Speaker Nasheed’s home is located, as part of MNDF’s security assessments.
Defence Minister Mariya denied that the MP’s call was related to the attempted assassination of Speaker Nasheed, claiming that no credible and actionable intelligence about the actual attack had been received.
Further, It was revealed that the Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Major General Shamaal, and the head of intelligence briefed Speaker Nasheed on previous threats as well as related advisories.
Following the IED explosion on May 6th, Nasheed was brought to ADK Hospital with heavy bleeding, and both internal and external shrapnel injuries.
Nasheed was receiving treatment at the Critical Care Unit of ADK Hospital in Malé before departing to Germany for further treatment.
