Aminath Shauna, Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, has denied rumors that the government plans to block US-based SpaceX’s Starlink internet service.
According to rumors that circulated after the announcement of decreased internet pricing, the government has committed to prohibiting more service providers from entering the Maldives for the next five years as part of the agreement with internet service providers to cut internet pricing.
Minister Shauna indicated that she encourages new solutions to long-standing problems and that the government has no plans to prohibit Starlink once it is accessible in the region.
According to recent internet service adjustments, the Maldives’ minimum throttling speeds for base broadband package would be set at 2Mbps. Furthermore, the minimum throttle speed for packages above MVR 300 is set at 5Mbps.
