An investigation has been launched in the Maldives after a man claiming to heal hearing and vision impairments arrived in the country and allegedly treated some individuals.
The man, who goes by the name of Mala Ali Mahmud on social media, posted videos on TikTok showing him using Quranic verses to treat hearing-impaired children. This has led to some accusations of sorcery, and a section of religious leaders have advised caution towards him.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that they are looking into the matter and that the man, who was in the country on a tourist visa, has already left. The ministry is trying to trace those who claimed to have been treated by him and determine which islands he visited. In the videos, the man can be seen holding the children’s necks and putting his fingers in their mouths in the name of healing.
According to media reports, the man is an Iraqi Kurd and a Mullah, identified as Ali Kalak and also known as Mala Ali Kurd Pakistani. He has a history of fraud charges and has been deported from Saudi Arabia and arrested in Turkey.
