Misbah Mohamed, 25, who was reported missing by his family in April and reportedly kept as a ransom by a narcotics network, has been detained upon his return to the Maldives, according to the Maldives Police Service.
On Friday, a police media spokesman stated that Misbah was arrested upon his arrival in the country to enforce a court ruling, and that paperwork is being completed to transfer his detention to the Maldives Correctional Service.
Last month, police stated Misbah was being held as human collateral by an international narcotics network.
Police stated that the 25-year-old boarded a FlyDubai flight last November at 10:13 p.m., citing Maldives Immigration paperwork. The officials also stated that Misbah boarded the flight alongside Irufan Thagiyyu, the leader of a huge local drug network. According to Police, Irufan returned 11 days later on an Emirates flight.
According to police, the investigation also found that Misbah Mohamed traveled from Dubai to Pakistan. Police suspected Misbah Mohamed traveled to Pakistan to act as a “guarantor” for an international drug trafficking network until the money for the drug shipment carried to the Maldives by Irufan Thagiyyu was settled.
In addition, authorities stated that his trip to Pakistan is being investigated as a separate case.
