The Maldives Police Service has stated that 25-year-old Misbah Mohamed, who was reported missing by his family in April, is being held as human collateral by an international narcotics network.
Police stated that the 25-year-old boarded a FlyDubai flight last November at 10:13 p.m., citing Maldives Immigration paperwork. The officials also stated that Misbah boarded the flight alongside Irufan Thagiyyu, the leader of a huge local drug network. According to Police, Irufan returned 11 days later on an Emirates flight.
According to Police, the investigation also found that Misbah Mohamed traveled from Dubai to Pakistan. Police suspect Misbah Mohamed traveled to Pakistan to act as a “guarantor” for an international drug trafficking network until the money for the drug shipment carried to the Maldives by Irufan Thagiyyu was settled.
Irufan was one of the individuals apprehended in connection with the smuggling of over 72 kilograms of heroin into the Maldives in a fishing boat on December 8, 2020. In connection with the case, the Prosecutor General’s Office filed charges against ten people, including Irfan, on February 14.
