Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal said the agreement with India to develop a naval dockyard in Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) could be terminated at any time by the government of Maldives.
During a press conference held this afternoon by Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) regarding rumors and allegations about the UTF agreement, Chief said “If the government of the Maldives wished, or one of the two parties involved in the agreement wished, I cannot speak on behalf of the other party, but if the government of Maldives wished, the agreement could be terminated.”
Furthermore, Chief of Defense Force said developing Uthuru Thila Falhu will improve the operational capabilities of Maldives National Defense Force and the Coastguard. Talking about the leaked document he said it is a “false document” and it had “baseless facts.”
Major General Shamaal urged the media not to spread fake and unverified news against MNDF and he said they are looking into taking further actions. He further assured that the agreement does not jeopardize the national security and sovereignty of the country.
