The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has increased security and is conducting a special operation at Velana International Airport.
MNDF spokesman Ibrahim Azim confirmed the operation, stating that the MNDF had been conducting a special operation in the country’s main airport since last night, but he did not elaborate.
Several armed MNDF officers have been stationed at the airport, conducting thorough checks on all vehicles entering and exiting Hulhule’.
According to local media, the operation was launched in response to prior intelligence of a potential attack on the country’s busiest airport, which has yet to be confirmed by relevant authorities.
This comes in the wake of last week’s attack on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, which left him and three others critically injured.
MNDF officers have been operating in the capital Male’ and several other residential islands since the attack.
