Mohamed Shafiu has won the empty position on the Maldives Media Council (MMC) in an election held on Saturday.
Shafiu earned 57 votes, defeating Waheed Ali, who garnered 36 votes, and Aishath Hussain, who received no votes. In the MMC by-election, a total of 93 media outlets voted, while 103 media outlets registered to vote.
Following the departure of MMC member Mohamed Yameen Ibrahim, the MMC started accepting applications for membership.
MMC regulations require the council to nominate a new member for a two-year term within 28 days of a seat being vacant.
The MMC’s major role is to safeguard, promote, and sustain press freedom, as well as to foster the development of a feeling of duty, public service, ethics, and a high degree of professionalism among all journalists.
