The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has officially announced the dissolution of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) due to their failure to meet the mandatory membership requirement within the specified timeframe. Despite receiving a second notice from the electoral body, MRM was unable to fulfill the requirement, leading to their dissolution.
Under the provisions of the Political Parties Act, a political party must have a minimum of 3,000 members to be eligible for registration. However, as of February 21, MRM reported a membership count of 2,981, falling short of the required threshold, as confirmed by ECM.
Reacting to the decision, former President and founder of MRM, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, along with President of MRM, Ahmed Faris Maumoon, have voiced their disagreement, stating that the decision made by ECM was unlawful.
