Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has implemented a system that alerts them in real time when its buses violate the speed limit.
MTCC’s Chief Operating Officer Shahid Hussain acknowledged the installation of the speed monitoring system in an interview with a local news outlet, stating that it was completed last week.
Shahid noted that some buses have been violating the set speed limits on the highway and bridge, and that if a bus is travelling faster than 50km/h, it will now be instantly notified in the system.
Shahid further emphasised that bus drivers and conductors are frequently educated on the consequences of speeding, adding that the number of buses speeding with the implementation of the new system will be greatly reduced.
Furthermore, Shahid stated that the present bus fleet is insufficient to offer services to Hulhumale’ Phase 2, adding that around 2,000 people commute between Phase 1 and Phase 2, with over 10,000 people commuting between Male’, Hulhumale’, and the airport. He stated that plans were being made to add new buses to the fleet.
