Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced work on the land reclamation and shore protection project in Kuda Giri, Kaafu Atoll, which is being developed as a picnic island.
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure awarded the project to MTCC on September 1.
The project site in Kuda Giri was mobilized on November 11, according to the company, and it is projected to be completed by March 2022.
The project was granted to MTCC for around MVR 41 million with a completion schedule of 150 days, and as part of it, 8 hectares of land would be reclaimed for a picnic island and 1.5 hectares for a sandbank.
According to MTCC, the project will also include the building of a 397.27-meter breakwater and a 428.38-meter groyne.
MTCC CEO Adam Azim earlier stated that the project is a priority for the present government and underlined that Kuda Giri Island is substantially larger than Kudabandos Island, which was a favorite picnic site for Male’ City residents.
