The Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), led by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, have opted not to run in the Komandoo parliamentary by-election.
The party chose not to run in the by-election today, after having indicated their intention to do so last Saturday.
Following today’s council meeting, the MTD said that they do not believe an election is suitable at this time. The party then thanked all candidates who applied to the MTD to run in the Komandoo by-election.
Other political parties that have declared their participation in the by-election include the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the opposition coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), and the Maldives National Party (MNP)
The Komandoo seat became vacant after MP Hussain Waheed died on December 14. He died at the age of 53 in ADK Hospital while undergoing cancer treatment.
The Elections Commission stated by-elections for the Komandoo seat would be held on February 5, 2022.
