The Maldives Police Service has begun an inquiry into the brutal murder of a well-known local businessman discovered tied up and dumped in an abandoned well in Dhangethi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, on Thursday.
Local media reports have identified the victim as Mahmood Aboobakuru, 55.
A Dhangethi Council member explained that the 55-year-old had gone missing since he was last seen watching the Maldives-India SAFF Championship match on Wednesday night.
According to the council, Mahmood’s body was discovered inside a well in an abandoned house, placed into a bag with legs tied up, after locals and police began looking for him on Thursday.
The council said that locals had accused two people of murder, who were granted police protection after locals sought them out.
According to reports, Mahmood was a staple food and gas shop owner, as well as the owner of a café and a boat.
The Maldives Police Service acknowledged that a dead body was discovered in a well packed inside a sack and that police were on the scene at the time. They also stated that additional information will be shared with the media as it became available.
Authorities reported that Mahmood’s body was returned to Dhangethi on Friday after forensic investigations. Although authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of death, witnesses who observed his body claim to have seen numerous strikes to his head and neck with a sharp weapon.
