Speaker of the Parliament and President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed is adamant to hold a public referendum to determine whether to change the governance system.
In a tweet, the former President said that only the public will know what is best for them and that this can only be determined by a public referendum. Nasheed further said that the majority of MDP members want to hold a public referendum to determine whether or not to change the governance system and no one can deny what the public wants.
Furthermore, Nasheed also compared the change of governance system to the demise of former President Maumoon Abdulgayyoom’s 30-year long rule. Nasheed said some thought it would never happen but the public proved that they needed a change. Likewise, a change in system of governance might be long overdue, according to Nasheed.
Speaker Nasheed proposed a motion to MDP’s congress to hold a public referendum vote to change the system of governance in the Maldives. However, many including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that Maldives does not need at this time.
