People’s Majlis Speaker and Maldivian Democratic Party Leader Mohamed Nasheed intends to submit a motion to the MDP National Congress calling for the declaration of a state of emergency to allow police to apprehend terrorists, according to reports.
Speaker Nasheed plans to introduce the proposal during tonight’s MDP National Congress meeting at 21:00.
According to local media, Nasheed’s motion would notify the government of the MDP’s determination to establish a state of emergency in order for authorities to apprehend terrorists, citing information disclosed by the police commissioner and the prosecutor general on July 24th.
On Saturday, Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed disclosed that the May 6 blast was the suspects’ fourth attempt to carry out Speaker Nasheed’s assassination plot.
Additionally, Hameed stated that the investigation revealed that the suspects began planning the attack in 2019 and had begun final preparations to carry it out by the end of 2020. Police further indicated that the suspects were prepared to kill Nasheed with a suicide bomber if necessary.
