Former President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed has asked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to reform the government to a Parliamentary system and to make him the Prime Minister.
In a message sent to President Solih and his cabinet ministers, Nasheed made his wish to be the Prime Minister known and would like to run the country under his leadership. Moreover, to rescind the next Presidential Election in 2023 and form the government through the Parliament instead.
Nasheed has been vocal about his preference of a Parliamentary system. He has said this is the best choice for the Maldives and that he wish to discuss this with President Solih himself.
Maldives took a referendum vote for a Presidential or Parliamentary form of government in 2007, though the majority of the public voted for a Presidential at the time.
