People’s Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s medical care overseas for injuries sustained in the May 6 bombing, as well as his stay at Hotel Jen upon his return, cost MVR 2.3 million, the finance ministry said.
According to the finance ministry, the majority of the expense went to his medical treatment in the United Kingdom, followed by the cost of his 21-day stay at Hotel Jen after his return.
The former president’s medical treatment in the United Kingdom cost around MVR 1.5 million spread over three months: MVR 610,601 in June, MVR 319,767 in August, and MVR 570,172 in September.
Furthermore, the government had paid MVR 698,168 for his stay at Hotel Jen following his return and up to his departure to attend COP26.
In addition, a total of MVR 164,601 was spent on the Majlis speaker’s stay in Germany for medical treatment.
The finance minister, Ibrahim Ameer, stated that Nasheed’s stay at Hotel Jen was arranged at the request of the Maldives National Defense Force, which oversees his protection.
