Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has decided to send text notifications to individuals newly registered as a member of a political party.
ECM stated a new process will be in place to verify the validity of membership forms submitted by political parties. As such, ECM stated the full members’ list of political parties will be published on the website of the commission starting from August 1. ECM added any individual added to the registry of a political party will receive a text message notifying them of their membership.
President of ECM Fuad Thaufeeq said many parties submit invalid membership forms, with forged signatures and fingerprints. He noted this leads to several people being registered as members of political parties without their knowledge.
