Former Assistant Auditor General Hussain Niyazy has been appointed as the Maldives’ next Auditor General.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented Niyazy with his letter of appointment during a ceremony at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning. Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir administered his oath of office.
Niyazy received support from parliament for his new job last week in a vote of 64 legislators. He has been the Assistant Auditor General since 2011, and he has over 15 years of experience working for the Auditor General’s Office, where he has also held the positions of Audit Manager and Assistant Auditor.
Niyazy has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Bangalore in India and has been an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) in the United Kingdom since 2008. He now serves on the council of the Maldives Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is also the Chairperson of the Admission and Licensing Committee of the Maldives Institute of Chartered Accountants.
He takes over for Hassan Ziyath, who resigned as Auditor General in May when it was revealed that he was on a list of possible beneficiaries of the MMPRC scandal.
