Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a press conference today have said that there is no imminent danger from the oil barge which sunk following a fire on Saturday near Emboodhoo Falhu, Kaafu Atoll.
The barge was carrying 60,000 liters of diesel from Male’ City to Laamu Atoll when the fire incident happened.
In the press conference, MNDF Coast Guard Commandant Colonel Mohamed Saleem said most likely the diesel had evaporated after they had initially detected some signs of diesel in the area. He further stated the barge has now sunk more than 1,000 meters deep and that Coast Guard will be monitoring the situation for any further development.
EPA Director General Ibrahim Naeem stated that no indication of an oil spill was detected after several surveys in the area. In addition to this, he said that diesel evaporate quickly after being exposed to the air since it is a very volatile fuel.
Authorities further assured that the situation was under control and they will continue monitoring the situation for any new dangers.
