President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated no pardons have been granted to prisoners in exchange for bribes. Moreover, the government will not tolerate such acts.
President also added that a prisoner will be pardoned or have his sentence reduced based on the evaluation and review from the clemency board.
Several accusations have been made against the current administration granting pardons or reduced sentence in exchange for bribes.
Earlier this week, Former President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed requested the Judiciary Committee to investigate and evaluate the sentences and profile of prisoners and advise the government regarding the appropriate action to take in favor of the evaluated prisoners. This could be either a reduced sentence or a complete pardon based on their crime and behavior evaluation.
