Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has said that the government does not have plans to amend the eligibility requirements for housing schemes despite backlash.
Speaking at the Parliament of the Maldives in response to the questions posed on the eligibility requirements, Minister Aslam revealed there are no plans from the government to make amendments to the requirements.
He highlighted the plan to issue land plots from the Greater Male’ Region for the citizens of Male’ City and those who are registered in the special list after migrating. Therefore, he noted, residents from other regions of the Maldives are not eligible to apply for land plots issued from the Greater Male’ Region.
The government has opened applications for 3,000 land plots from Hulhumale’ and Gulhifalhu under the Binveriyaa housing scheme and 4,000 housing units in Hulhumale’ under the Gedhoruveriyaa housing scheme. The eligibility requirements for the housing schemes has received severe backlash online with many calling it as an apartheid between residents of Male’ and rest of the country.
