The appointment of Samaau Ahmed Najeeb to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) was approved by the People’s Majlis on Tuesday.
Samaau gained the consent of 42 lawmakers who voted during a session of parliament today.
The President’s Office submitted the names of 14 candidates to the People’s Majlis in July to fill the vacancy at HRCM. The Human Rights Committee picked Samaau, who is now a Senior State Attorney in the Attorney General’s Office, from a list of 14 names.
Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla, Moomina Waheed, and Aishath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq are the current members of the HRCM. However, the legislation requires HRCM to have a minimum of five members.
