Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has voted to pass National Pay Commission’s recommendation on increasing salary for Council Presidents from MVR 15,000 to MVR 23,000.
According to National Pay Commission’s recommendation, a City Mayor and Deputy Mayor will receive MVR 40,000 and MVR 35,000, respectively. While MVR 30,000 has been allocated for Members of the City Council.
Further, Council President’s Deputy is set to receive MVR 17,000 while Members of the Island Council will receive MVR 12,000.
Some members of the parliament committee highlighted the significant difference between the salary of Council President and Deputy as MP for Hanimaadhoo Constituency Abdul Ghafoor Moosa recommended decreasing the salary of Council President to MVR 20,000.
MP Yaugoob Abdulla and MP Mohamed Aslam supported the recommendation, however, MP Abdul Ghafoor later withdrew his recommendation.
Committee Chair Mohamed Nashiz explained the salary difference, saying National Pay Commission’s recommendation was based on allocating an increased salary for Council Presidents compared with that of Director-Generals of government offices.
