Parliament has voted to establish a controversial entertainment center in Malé City for youths.
The motion submitted to the parliament by MP of Henveiru West Constituency Hassan Latheef was passed by a majority of 46 votes.
After the evaluation of the proposal, Social Affairs committee had previously decided to give the greenlight to development of an entertainment center under supervision of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage. The proposal also includes an event hall for live shows, band practice rooms and a recording studio at the center.
The motion triggered heated debates with heavy criticism from opposition members claiming that ruling party MDP was trying to destroy the country by corrupting the youth and religion.
Moreover, some MPs stressed that the Maldivian youth prioritize housing, job opportunities, and to build a stable family instead of an entertainment center.
However, MPs from super majority leader MDP were quick to defend their views on the matter stating that socio-economic issues Malé faces such as overcrowding, lack of housing, and lack of job availability needs a good enough escapism for the betterment of their mental health.
The motion has received several criticism from religious scholars as well.
