Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has officially resigned from his position, a decision communicated during a parliamentary meeting convened to address a no-confidence motion against him.
The announcement of Nasheed’s resignation was made to the Parliament sitting by Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shareef, who presided over the meeting. Subsequently, Nasheed confirmed his resignation to the assembly.
In his formal resignation letter, Nasheed expressed concern that continuing as the Speaker would further harm the parliamentary system, given the current dynamics of the majority party. Nasheed, a former president, assumed the role of Speaker on May 28, 2019, garnering 67 votes in favor of his appointment.
