The Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has opened an investigation into how Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s security was jeopardized during the May 6th terror attack.
The committee is mandated by the Constitution to investigate how the security forces are run, according to a press release issued by the committee.
The press release also listed the committee’s emergency meeting on May 7th, following the attack on Speaker Nasheed. The committee said it urged the Maldives Police Service to treat the attack as a serious matter and prioritize the case.
The committee also recommended Police seek assistance from international experts with experience in the field, according to the press release.
In the press release, the committee also stated that it has agreed to investigate how Speaker Nasheed’s security services were compromised.
The explosion occurred on Thursday night, as Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed was getting into his car near his home in G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition, three other people have been confirmed to have been injured as a result of the explosion.
