The Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament made a significant decision on Wednesday by approving a recommendation urging the government to implement a ban on Israeli passports and the entry of Israeli citizens into the Maldives.
The motion, proposed by Ahmed Haitham, Independent Member from Mahchangolhi South Constituency, gained approval amid discussions condemning Israel’s perceived inhuman attacks on Palestinians. Haitham, in a letter, expressed his strong stance against Israel’s actions and recommended the prohibition of Israeli citizens entering the Maldives.
Highlighting the constitutional context, Ibrahim Shareef, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Member of Parliament from Maradhoo constituency and former committee chairman, emphasized that according to Article 115 of the Constitution, the President has the authority to decide and administer all matters and policies related to the foreign affairs of the Maldives. He urged the parliament to address this recommendation by bringing it to the government’s attention.
Following members’ comments and deliberations, the committee passed the recommendation, advising the government to enforce a ban on Israeli citizens entering the Maldives. The decision will be communicated to the government and the President through an official letter.
