The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has opened registration for pregnant women to receive COVID-19 vaccination.
According to HPA, the Pfizer vaccine will be administered to pregnant women. Vaccines will be distributed to eligible persons on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is open through an online form.
Dr. Mohamed Ali, Consultant Physician at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), stated that there are currently around 50 COVID-19-positive pregnant women in the country, one of whom is on ventilator.
Pregnant women are ineligible for the Covishield and Sinopharm vaccines, which were first made available in the Maldives. With the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives, the number of cases among pregnant women has begun to rise dramatically.
The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has approved four vaccines for use in the country, including Pfizer.
Maldives obtained 5,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access facility (COVAX) in March.
